Summer Music in the Garden

Habourfront

Celebrating 11 years of free concerts in a magical setting!

Treat yourself to outstanding performances of classical and traditional music from around the world, as the popular Summer Music in the Garden returns with another superb season.

FREE concerts take place in the Toronto Music Garden on Thursdays at 7pm and Sundays at 4pm and are approximately one hour in length. Bench seating is available but limited, so feel free to bring a lawn chair – and don't forget your hat or umbrella and sunscreen as shade is also limited.

Concerts proceed weather permitting. Please call our info desk at 416-973-4000 for up-to-the-minute rain calls.

The annual Summer Music in the Garden series and tours are produced by Harbourfront Centre in partnership with City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, with the generous support of Toronto Culture, Margaret & Jim Fleck, George Dembroski, David Graham, Judy & Wil Matthews, Sandra & Jim Pitblado and William & Phyllis Waters.

Summer Music in the Garden is curated for Harbourfront Centre by artistic director, Tamara Bernstein.

    Songs Across the Waters
    Celebrate Canada Day with traditional Mohawk songs sung by the Ahkwesasne Women Singers, and the world premiere of a new piece by Barbara Croall performed by the composer and clarinetist Peter Stoll.
  • Sunday July 4 at 4pm
    Fermate il Passo ("Stay a moment, passer-by!")
    Italian early music luminary Viva BiancaLuna Biffi sings a universal tale of love, accompanying herself on the viola d'arco.
  • Thursday July 8 at 7pm
    Look Back in Tenderness: Brahms on Love and Life
    Brahms' beloved Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, Op. 115, performed by clarinetist Jerome Summers and the Madawaska String Quartet.
  • Sunday July 11 at 4pm
    Does this Drum Make My Brass Look Big
    A glittering performance by the brass and percussion sections of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
  • Thursday July 15 at 7pm
    Four Hands, Twenty-Nine Strings
    Music from the 17th to the 20th century is performed by violinist Linda Melsted and guitarist Terry McKenna.
  • Thursday July 22 at 7pm
    Dance Tunes without Borders
    Music based on folk dances from around the world, performed by banjoist Jayme Stone, fiddler Mike Barnett, guitarist Grant Gordy and bass player Greg Garrison.
  • Sunday July 25 at 4pm
    Divertissements for a Summer Day
    The Liberty Village Wind Trio performs French music for oboe, clarinet and bassoon.
  • Thursday July 29 at 7pm
    The Road to Kashgar
    Vancouver's Orchid Ensemble presents music inspired by the rhythms, modes and character of the many lands and cultural traditions found along the ancient Silk Road.
  • Thursday August 5 at 7pm
    Nagata Shachu: Unplugged!
    The thrilling Toronto-based Japanese music ensemble Nagata Shachu will perform a selection of original works from its extensive repertoire, on thunderous taiko drums as well as the delicate shamisen and bamboo flutes.
  • Sunday August 8 at 4pm
    The King's Feast: Dilemma Tales from Around the World
    Storyteller Dan Yashinsky and Zimbabwean mbira masters Mutaba and Pasi will delight listeners of every age with music, dance and stories.
  • Thursday August 12 at 7pm
    Inspired by Cremona
    Baroque violinists Patricia Ahern and Linda Melsted, harpsichordist Borys Medicky and lutenist Lucas Harris perform passionate music from 17th-century Italy.
  • Sunday August 15 at 4pm
    Dancing with Dvorak
    The Cecilia String Quartet returns to perform works by Dvorak and Brahms.
  • Thursday August 19 at 7pm
    Ragas for a Summer Evening
    Sarangi virtuosa Aruna Narayan invokes the spiritual dimensions of twilight through North Indian ragas.
  • Sunday August 22 at 4pm
    Masque of the Garden
    The Toronto Masque Theatre celebrates summer, life, and the Music Garden itself, with music, dance and words.
  • Thursday August 26 at 7pm
    Able was I ere I heard Abel
    Gambist Justin Haynes and baroque cellist Kate Haynes pay tribute to the 18th century's last great gamba virtuoso: Carl Friedrich Abel.
  • Sunday August 29 at 4pm
    Accordions – Unleashed!
    Five accordionists rock the garden with a program of solos and ensembles!
  • Thursday September 2 at 7pm
    Bach at Dusk
    Cellist Winona Zelenka performs Bach's dark, dramatic Suite No. 5 in C Minor.
  • Thursday September 9 at 7pm
    Tales of Love, Murder and (Other) Nonsense
    Mezzo-soprano Marta Herman performs music from Elizabethan England and the late 20th century.
  • Sunday September 12 at 4pm
    Mozart Un-Locked
    The Rosetta Trio performs music by Matthew Locke and Mozart, on period instruments.
  • Sunday September 19 at 4pm
    Shauna and Friends
    Cellist Shauna Rolston and outstanding students from the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music bring the season to a fitting close with music for cello ensembles.

Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Toronto Waterfront, however, is much more than just the run... it's a festive, full weekend that starts with gurus John Stanton and Coach Jenny Hadfield at the free 2-day Expo, Friday and Saturday. There's a Saturday morning (free) short International Friendship Run, hosted by the Running Room, a fun carbo load pasta dinner on Saturday night, and a post-race Victory party in Nathan Phillips Square from 9am to 3pm on Sunday. It's all part of an "unforgettable" Toronto experience!

The Natrel Rink

Located on Queens Quay West on the shores of Lake Ontario, The Natrel Rink is the city's winter gem. From skating lessons to kids' events to DJ skate nights, here's your hot spot this winter season. The Natrel Rink is open seven days a week beginning mid-November (weather permitting). Admission is FREE.
