TORONTO MUSIC GARDEN BACKGROUND

The Toronto Music Garden is one of Toronto's most enchanting locations. The Garden was conceived by internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and designed by Boston-based landscape artist Julie Moir Messervy. Its design interprets Bach's Suite No. 1 in G Major for Unaccompanied Cello, with each dance movement within the suite corresponding to a different section of the Garden: Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Menuett and Gigue. The Toronto Music Garden is the only garden/park in the world known to be directly inspired by a specific piece of music. In tribute to the garden's anniversary, author and landscape designer Messervy has released The Toronto Music Garden: Inspired by Bach in partnership with the City of Toronto and Margaret and Jim Fleck, available at Harbourfront Centre's BOUNTY Contemporary Craft + Design or through http://www.torontoparksandtrees.org/ For more information on the book, call Valerie Croswell at 416-392-9470 or email vcroswe@toronto.ca.

The Toronto Music Garden opened in 1999; concerts have been held there every summer since 2000. Since 2001, the concerts have been produced by Harbourfront Centre in partnership with City of Toronto, under the artistic direction of Tamara Bernstein. The Garden itself is maintained by City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, as well as volunteers.

The Toronto Music Garden, located on Queens Quay West at the foot of Spadina Avenue, is easy to reach by public transit. From Spadina Station take the 510 (Union Station) streetcar south. From Union Station take the Harbourfront LRT (509 or 510 streetcar) going west from inside Union Station. Call the Toronto Transit Commission at 416-393-4636 for transit information.

  • WAYNE SHORTER QUARTET
Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 8 PM / Massey Hall

For more than fifty years, Wayne Shorter has had an esteemed influence on jazz music. As a celebrated sax player (both tenor and soprano), his signature sound, matched by his choice of notes and expression, has long established Shorter as a true living legend. As a composer, he has written for prominent groups such as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis Quintet and Weather Report. A prolific solo artist, he expanded his palette from hard bop almost into the atonal avant-garde, with fascinating excursions into jazz/rock territory. The Wayne Shorter Quartet consists of Grammy award-winning pianist Danilo Perez, acclaimed bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade who, lucky for us, joins us twice this season, also performing with Chick Corea and Christian McBride.

Opera Atelier Celebrates
25 extraordinary years as
Canada's Baroque Opera Company
Acis and Galatea
October 30, November 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7

La Clemenza di Tito
April 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, and May 1, 2011

Opera-Atelier.jpg (62931 bytes)Opera Atelier celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season with two new productions: one pays tribute to the company's roots, the second points to its ambitious plans for the future.

The season opens with OA's first fully-staged production of Handel's pastorale Acis and Galatea. Based on Ovid's tale of the water nymph Galatea and her doomed love for the Arcadian shepherd Acis, it is one of Handel's most popular creations. Tenor Thomas Macleay, who thrilled Toronto audiences with his performance in last season's IphigÈnie en Tauride, will sing the title role of Acis partnered with Canadian soprano Mireille Asselin, in her company debut as Galatea. They are joined by bass Jo„o Fernandes who appears as the giant Polyphemus and tenor Laurence Wiliford as the spirit Damon. Acis will also feature Artists of Atelier Ballet, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir under the baton of David Fallis.

This production is directed by Marshall Pynkoski and choreographed by Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg. Both sets and costumes will be designed by Gerard Gauci – a first for OA! The production will be lit by Kevin Fraser. Acis and Galatea runs October 30, November 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7, 2010 and is sung in English with English SURTITLES.

The spring production will be North America's first period production of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito. In Mozart's lifetime, La Clemenza di Tito was considered "his most perfect work", enjoying enormous success in Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Naples, St. Petersburg, Paris and London. Desperate intrigues, unrequited love and heart stopping reversals of fortune punctuate this thrilling story taken directly from Roman history. This is the fourth new Mozart production of Opera Atelier's ambitious "Mozart Six" plan which to date includes Idomeneo (2007), The Abduction from the Seraglio (2008) and The Marriage of Figaro (which opens April 2010). Opera Atelier has re-assembled the most famous cast in the company's history for this exciting production. Full casting will be announced at a later date. La Clemenza di Tito will be sung in Italian with English SURTITLES and runs April 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, and May 1, 2011.

Performances for Opera Atelier's 25th Anniversary Season will take place at the Elgin Theatre (189 Yonge Street) in Toronto. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinee performances begin at 3:00 p.m.
