| Saturday, June 2, 2007 marked the
Architectural Opening of the Royal Ontario Museums (ROM) spectacular Michael
Lee-Chin Crystal. The new prism-shaped wing contains the ROMs new main
entrance and lobby, Garfield Weston Exhibition Hall -- and the Hyacinth Gloria Chen
Crystal Court. Two of the seven new Crystal Galleries -- the James and Louise Temerty
Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs and the Gallery of the Age of Mammals will open
December 15, 2007. Now open for guests to enjoy are: the ROM Museum Store, the Roloff Beny
Gallery (the Institute for Contemporary Cultures new home) on Level 4, the
critically acclaimed C5 (Crystal Five) Restaurant Lounge (Level 5), and Food Studio (Level

Shreyas and Mina Ajmera Gallery of
Africa, Americas, and Asia Pacific
Opening April 5, 2008 |
| This triangular gallery covers 700 m2 (7,500
square feet) and creatively engages and connects through to the 1933 Hilary and Galen
Weston Wing. The gallery presents the artistic and cultural traditions of indigenous
peoples in four geographical areas: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Oceania, and Central and South
America. This is the first permanent home for these collections in over 30 years, with
many artifacts on display for the first time. Each object reveals an aspect of the
everyday life, commerce, art or ritual of an indigenous people. Number of objects: Approximately

Patricia Harris Gallery of Textiles
and Costume
Opening April 16, 2008 |
| This spacious new gallery with angular walls rising to
approximately 13 metres (43 feet) presents the ROMs rich and diverse collection of
50,000 textile and costume artifacts through a rotating display of about 200 pieces dating
from the 1st century BC to the 21st century AD. Outstanding examples of Chinese imperial
costume, late Antique and early Islamic textiles from Egypt, western fashion from the
Baroque period to the present day and early Canadian coverlets illustrate the extensive
transformations in textile design and manufacturing throughout the past 3,000 years. The open-concept design and high ceilings allow textiles to be
displayed in unique formations presenting visitors with a three-dimensional experience. |

Over 80 images chronicle life in
Chinas Paris of the East
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) presents Shanghai
1860-1949: Historical Photographs, on display in the Herman Herzog Levy
Gallery, part of the Asian Suite of Galleries on Level 1 of the Philosophers Walk
Wing, from April 26 to October 26, 2008. The exhibit displays over 80 images highlighting
the architecture, surroundings, inhabitants and way of life in Chinas foremost
commercial and cultural centre up to the radical changes of 1949, when the Peoples
Republic of China was established. The images are selected from the ROMs extensive
collections of historical photographs, including recent gifts by Joey and Toby Tanenbaum,
Jacob Way and Amelia Gertrud Way-Evans. The events of 1949 are documented in 12
photographs by photojournalist Sam Tata, on loan from the Canadian Museum of Contemporary
Photography in Ottawa. |

Shanghai Kaleidoscope
May 4, 2008 - November 2, 2008Organized by the Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC) at the
ROM, Shanghai Kaleidoscope offers an unprecedented view of one of the world's most
dynamic cities, highlighting an emerging generation of Chinese artists, architects, and
fashion designers. Examining Shanghai as a laboratory for 21st-century urban creation, the
exhibition brings together an adventurous mix of architectural models and digital
simulations; designer fashion apparel, drawings and runway videos; as well as paintings,
photo-works and video installations by 35 of the city's leading contemporary artists,
architects and fashion designers. Generously supported by Manulife Financial, the
exhibition will be presented in the Roloff Beny Gallery in the ROMs Michael Lee-Chin
Crystal. |

The Black Star Sapphire of
Queensland
To June 30, Samuel European Galleries, North, Level 3Discover the science surrounding the stunning Black Star of Queensland, one of
the largest-known cut and polished star sapphires in the world. This is the first time
this unique and extravagant gem is displayed in Canada and the first time anywhere in the
world since 1969. The highlight of the exhibition will be the 733 carat Black
Star surrounded by 35 brilliant cut diamonds. The exhibition will also look at the
chemistry and structure of sapphires, how sapphires are formed in nature, where and how
they are mined, and their significance in various cultures. Specific to the Black Star of
Queensland, a section on asterism (an optical phenomenon in the shape of a star)
will also be included. |

Darwin
To August 4, 2008This comprehensive exhibition explores the extraordinary life of
Charles Darwin (1809-1882) whose curiosity, observations and discoveries nearly 150 years
ago forever changed the perception of the origin of species and launched modern biological
science. In addition to his theory of evolution, Darwin is known for his work as a
botanist, geologist, and naturalist. From specimens of Gal·pagos finches to original
manuscripts and notebooks, the exhibition, on display in the spacious new Garfield Weston
Exhibition Hall in the Lee-Chin Crystal, is the broadest collection ever assembled on the
life and work of Darwin.

Museum of Natural History, New York, in collaboration with the Museum of Science, Boston;
The Field Museum, Chicago; the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada; and the Natural
History Museum, London, England |

Gold and Silver: Treasures, Fakes and Forgeries

silver have been valued for currency and for the manufacture of luxurious and functional
objects. The program this year consists of selected lectures by leading experts designed
to enhance your appreciation of the treasures within the ROM collections. This program

CHINESE DESIGN.
EVERYDAY

| The Chinese New Year will ring in with the
opening of a new exhibit at the Design Exchange. This exhibition will provide a foundation
for understanding design in the greater China region and the role it plays in everyday
life. Visitors
will be introduced to an extensive graphic history along with numerous artifacts from the
contemporary era in the context of everyday life. A marriage of the millennia-old Chinese
cultural heritage and the most current Western and international trends will be examined
through a display of contemporary design objects, traditional household items like package
design and dinnerware, Mahjong table, fashion and the latest in lap-top computers.
Sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office
(HKETO) in Canada, the official representative of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region, the opening night of the exhibition will feature the Hong Kong: Gateway to
China a selection of designs and products taken from the Project
9707, a design project to celebrate and augment the achievements and talents of Hong
Kong design launched recently by the Hong Kong Design Centre to promote Hong Kongs
creativity industry.
Curator Professor Wendy Siuyi Wong, is Chair of the
Department of Design and the Associate Director of the York Centre for Asian Research,
York University. Dr. Wong has built on her previous exhibition, Chinese Graphic Design
Towards the International Sphere, held at the Cooper Union School of Arts in New York and
her extensive research on Chinese graphic design history, undertaken with the support of
the SSHRC Standard Research Grant.

Center and Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, York University, T&T Supermarket,
Chinese Canadian Advertising, Marketing & Media Association (CCAMMA) and Four L
