hotdocs-flicker.jpg (17175 bytes)The "light fantastic" takes on a whole new meaning in Nik Sheehan’s phantasmagoric FLicKeR. The film’s world premiere will occur at Hot Docs on April 23 (The Royal) at 7 p.m. and April 26 (Isabel Bader) at 7 p.m.

FLicKeR is the story of the influential Canadian artist and mystic Brion Gysin (1916-1986), and his amazing invention, the dream machine, which he believed would revolutionize human consciousness.

Featuring greats like William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin (in archival footage), singer Marianne Faithfull, rocker Iggy Pop, singer/artist Genesis P-Orridge of Psychic TV, poet John Giorno, filmmaker Kenneth Anger, and artist/turntablist DJ Spooky, FLicKeR is a hypnotic documentary that asks fundamental questions about an individual’s freedom to dream and create.

FLicKeR is written and directed by Nik Sheehan and produced by Maureen Judge (Makin’ Movies) and Anita Lee (NFB).

"Sea" life in a whole new way! Deep Sea transports you below the ocean surface to swim with some of the planet's most unique, dangerous and colorful creatures, from the unusual wolf eel to the giant Pacific octopus.

Through the magic of IMAX® technology, moviegoers come face to face with these underwater inhabitants to witness their peculiar and amazing behavior as they rely on one another for survival.

Deep Sea is directed by world-renowned underwater cinematographer, Howard Hall, produced by Toni Myers and Michele Hall, executive produced by Graeme Ferguson and narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, with an original score by Danny Elfman.

"Our goal is really to take you on a magical journey underwater to places that most of us have never been", comments producer Toni Myers. "Deep Sea includes moments that Howard himself has never filmed before, even in his long and varied career in undersea photography. These creatures are scary, beautiful, funny - it's such a vivid illustration of the astonishing array of the diversity of life."

Deep Sea was filmed in nine locations ranging from chilly, 8°C waters off British Columbia, to the Bahamas for encounters with tiger sharks. Among the 67 species you'll encounter are:

  • A mantis shrimp that uses appendages to spear or smash its prey.
  • Barracudas that change colour to signal cleaner fish that they are ready to be scoured of parasites living on their skin.
  • Spectacular coral spawning in the Gulf of Mexico, a night-time event that lasts for only one hour per year.
  • The colourful nudibranch, a form of sea slug, which raids anemones to steal their venomous, stinging tentacles, digests them and deposits the poisonous cells in its gills for protection.

Produced and distributed by IMAX® Corporation. Financed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

An Emotional Journey Through The Wetlands Of Louisiana And A Tribute To The Undying Spirit Of New Orleans

header-bayou.jpg (32326 bytes)

The new IMAX® film Hurricane on the Bayou will carry audiences on a journey deep into the heart of Louisiana — before, during and after Hurricane Katrina. The film is both a musical celebration of New Orleans as well as a haunting document of Katrina's powerful effects. Opening on October 12, 2007 at the Ontario Science Centre's Shoppers Drug Mart® OMNIMAX® Theatre, Hurricane on the Bayou leaves audiences with a greater appreciation for the need to restore the city, an understanding to protect the vital wetlands and a respect for the people and their spirit.

For centuries the Louisiana swamps have held ecological secrets of hurricanes: what drives a hurricane, when will they happen and how to protect from them. But the bayou is disappearing, at a rate of one acre every 30 minutes. Filmmaker Greg MacGillivray originally set out to tell the story and sound the alarm on this environmental calamity. He wanted to demonstrate what would happen if a hypothetical category 5 hurricane were to hit New Orleans. Little did he and his crew know that one of the worst hurricanes in history was on the approach and their imaginary nightmare would soon become a reality.

The film follows a group of musicians who explore the beautiful alligator filled bayous, a fragile home to unique animals and plants and uncover the electrifying culture of New Orleans. By recounting their personal stories of Katrina the musicians bring the focus to the rapidly disappearing wetlands. Reunited a year later they see a city in the throes of recovery and hope for the future with concerted efforts of preservation and restoration of the wetlands.

"Hurricane on the Bayou is not just the moving story of how four remarkable musicians survived Katrina and are facing the future, nor it is just the story of how the destruction of the wetlands is wreaking devastation for both humans and animals," says Greg MacGillivray. "I think it is really about the tremendous value of New Orleans and Louisiana to our nation. I hope we reveal what a treasure this city is – a wild swampland that turned into a fantastic center for music, food and the enjoyment of life itself. To lose New Orleans would be an unthinkable tragedy."

State of the art CGI effects recreates the fury of the storm made all the more dramatic by the size of the IMAX theatre screen. Eerie never-before-seen aerial footage of the storm's aftermath provides a new perspective on the city that is different from what most people saw on television.

The film features; legendary singer and songwriter Allen Toussaint, Cajun blues guitarist and wetlands activist Tab Benoit, 14 year old fiddling prodigy Amanda Shaw and zydeco accordion master Chubby Carrier. The film was directed by Greg MacGillivray (Everest and Coral Reef Adventure) and is narrated by Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep.
