TO CAST A SPELL ON
April 9 to August 22
logo-harryporter.gif (17446 bytes)This spring, Harry Potter fans across Canada will have the chance to step inside the famous wizard’s magical world when Harry Potter: The Exhibition opens at the Ontario Science Centre on April 9, 2010. Visitors will experience dramatic environments inspired by the Harry Potter film sets and see the amazing craftsmanship behind more than 200 authentic costumes and film props.

The Ontario Science Centre is the first and only Canadian venue to host Harry Potter: The Exhibition, which made its highly successful global debut at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry in April 2009.

Exhibitgroup/Giltspur created the 1,300 square metre (14,000 square foot) exhibition in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products. Harry Potter: The Exhibition offers fans a firsthand view of authentic artifacts displayed in detailed settings inspired by the film sets, including the Great Hall, Hagrid's hut, the Gryffindor™ common room, and more. The exhibition will also include costumes and props from the upcoming installments of the Harry Potter film series, once production of these films has been completed.

Harry Potter: The Exhibition opens Friday April 9, 2010, and will run through Sunday August 22, 2010 at the Ontario Science Centre. The exhibition is a timed entry experience and will be open for visitors during the Science Centre’s extended regular hours: from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily up to June 25, and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily from June 26 to the last date of the exhibition. Tickets are now available online at www.OntarioScienceCentre.ca, by calling 416-696-1000, or by visiting the box office.

BEAUTY MEETS CREATIVITY
12th ANNUAL IKENOBO IKEBANA JAPANESE FLORAL ART SHOW SHERWAY GARDENS –
SEPTEMBER 18 & 19

Ikenobo-Ikebana.jpg (59958 bytes)Experience a traditional Japanese art form as Sherway Gardens (Hwy 427 & the QEW) presents the 12th Annual Ikenobo Ikebana – Japanese Floral Art Show on Saturday, September 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, September 19 from 11am to 6 p.m. in Sherway Square. For additional information call 416-621-1070, or visit www.sherwaygardens.ca.

Get inspired by the ancient Japanese art of floral arrangements, as experts from the school of Ikebana provide hands on teaching for people interested in learning how to construct artistic floral arrangements. Visitors can also check out the many interesting and intricate arrangements from traditional to modern styles that will be on display at Sherway Gardens throughout the weekend.

Ikenobo Ikebana Demonstrations:
Saturday, September 18 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm
Sunday, September 19 2:00 pm

"Ikenobo Ikebana is living art," states Emily Wu, show organizer and senior professor of Ikenobo Ikebana. "Immerse yourself in the centuries old tradition at Sherway Gardens and learn how to make your own piece of Japanese inspired art during the daily expert demonstrations."

Using branches, leaves and any seasonal flowers such as roses, orchids and camellia, Ikebana artists create floral arrangements that are intricate, yet uncomplicated. Ikebana is distinguished from other ornamental flower arrangements with its goal of creating asymmetrical harmony of line, form, texture and colour between plants and container. Details ranging from the placement of the vase and materials are taken into consideration when creating an arrangement and the structure of the arrangement itself creates three points – Shoka – that symbolize heaven, earth and humankind. Most trees and flowers are underlined with specific meanings.

The simple and subtle lines of this ancient floral art add a touch of elegance and Zen to any dÈcor. Ikebana is also referred to as "kodo bana," or the "way of flowers" and promotes inner harmony and patience. This can be attributed to both the sensation associated with arranging beautiful flowers and creating unique designs for personal enjoyment. Given the highly stressful society most people endure, Ikebana offers an escape from a busy lifestyle and an outlet to exercise creativity.

"The goal is to get to the stage where your Ikebana designs are completely personalized, which is really a work of art," says Wu. "Regardless of your style the guiding principles are always simplicity and elegance."

November 13, 2010 - January 2, 2011
Harbourfront Centre’s York Quay Centre
The Too Cool For School Art & Science Fair is an interdisciplinary project in which people from all walks of life come together in a convergence of art and science. The event is structured just like a school science fair — participants will display their projects on rows of tables, and will be on hand to discuss their work with the public. The difference is that this event is as much about art as it is about science. Participants will be selected from an open call for submissions on the basis of originality, depth of inquiry, creative innovation and the element of surprise.

Calling all dreamers and inventors, original thinkers and adventurous tinkerers, mad scientists and misunderstood artists, anyone with an over-active imagination and a love/hate relationship with the so-called "real world" – we want to meet you and your pet project at the Too Cool For School Art & Science Fair. To find out how to participate, visit the project website at artandsciencefair.ca.

Five participants from the Art & Science Fair will be chosen to develop their projects further for this exciting exhibition that will continue to expand the dialogue between art and science. To find out more, visit the community blog and get inspired at artandsciencefair.ca.

Too Cool For School is part of Fresh Ground new works, Harbourfront Centre’s national commissioning programme. The project has two components. First is the Art & Science Fair on Saturday, May 8, 2010 in Harbourfront Centre’s Brigantine Room. The second element is a curated exhibition of select projects from the fair, to be held in the fall of 2010 (Nov. 13 to Jan. 2) in Harbourfront Centre’s York Quay Centre.
