  OAKVILLE MUSEUM CALENDAR
Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate where you will discover 19th & 20th century history situated in downtown Oakville in Old Oakville’s First Heritage District.   Oakville, once a thriving port of entry for merchants and sailors, was well known for its majestic scene and welcome, featuring the Erchless Estate Family Home & Custom House.

Set on the eastern side of the Oakville Harbour and the shores of Lake Ontario, sailors & ship merchants would enter into the outpost of British North America in the early 1800's. Today the majestic waterside view of Erchless symbolizes the many Heritage properties found along Oakville’s Lakeshore.  These significant architectural properties have become great legacies to the Town of Oakville, particularly known for its grand Estates.

Black History Walking Tours

Join the Oakville Museum for a guided walking tour of the Black history of Oakville.  Visitors can explore the rich history of this small settlement in the early 1830s along with its harbour which was an official point of entry to Canada.   This busy port became the destination for some African-American freedom-seekers to Canada.  Anti-slavery sympathizers such as the Wilson family and the Chisholms assisted many of these former slaves.  Some of these immigrants settled and started their new lives in Oakville.  Many became merchants, entrepreneurs, found work in service and became influential in the African-Canadian community.  Your Black History Walking Tour will feature historic buildings, sites and places in old Oakville.
