The Gondoliers
Meadowvale Theatre
Producers: Rita Ferguson, Christine McMahon
Artistic Team: Director: Joe Gomes/ Music Director: Ruth McDonald
Choreographer: Julie Gallie Stage Manager: Katrina Moore
Two just-married Venetian gondoliers are informed by the Grand Inquisitor that one of them
has just become the King of "Barataria", but only their foster mother, presently
at large, knows which one. As Barataria needs a king to put down unrest in the country,
they travel there to reign jointly, leaving their wives behind in Venice until the old
lady can be interviewed. It turns out that the king was wed in infancy to the beautiful
daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza Toro, and so it seems he is an unintentional
bigamist. Of course, the beautiful daughter is in love with a common servant! When the
young Spaniard and the two Venetian wives all show up wanting to know which of them is
queen, complications arise. No worries: The true identity of the king is revealed, and all
is combed out spectacularly well by the end. |

Cabaret
Meadowvale Theatre
Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on nightlife at the seedy
Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles
and her relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw.
A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein
Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the
action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub which serves as a constant metaphor
for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany throughout the show. |

Urinetown
Meadowvale Theatre
One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN is a hilarious tale
of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in
gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has
led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public
amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for
one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and
plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht
and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from
scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, URINETOWN
catapults the comedic romp into the new millennium with its outrageous
perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled
laughter. |

MOULIN ROUGE THE BALLET- Royal Winnipeg Ballet
Hammerson Hall, Living Arts Centre
Dazzling ballet for Valentine's Day! Join us for pre-theatre dinner or extend your evening
with post-show dessert as part of our Special Events series.
The most renowned cabaret in history has it all kicklines, pinwheels, and of course, the
Diamond Dog Dancers. This classical ballet production, performed by the Royal Winnipeg
Ballet tells the story of young Matthew and Nathalie as they tempt the fates to find love
at the infamous Moulin Rouge.
The Moulin Rouge has been the subject of many books, paintings, movies and musicals -
birthplace of the Quadrille, the Cancan and home to a cast of outrageous dancers known as
the Diamond Dogs. When the Moulin opened, Paris was a city of exquisite contradiction; art
was both elevated and abused, pomp and excess ran hand in hand with poverty and hardship,
and the heady elixir of personal freedom bred lifestyles that were often reckless and
addictive.
This production features the classical music of several composers, including Chopin and
Debussy, as well as the music of Piazzola and Quarteto Gelato. The high-energy dancing,
vibrant 1890s Paris inspired costumes and lavish sets make this a truly unique ballet
experience.
Having celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2009, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the double
distinction of being Canada's premier ballet company and the longest continuously
operating ballet company in North America. The company began to tour Canada in 1945 and
now spends 20 or more weeks a year on the road touring all across the globe. |
