Ontario Place opened its gates for its 39th season on Saturday, May 22 showcasing some fantastic new additions that will make the summer an unforgettable experience!

  • Tall Ships Parade of Sail
    On July 4th, 2010, Ontario Place welcomes some of the world’s tallest ships for the incredible finale of the Redpath Toronto Waterfront Festival. Ontario Place is the OFFICIAL destination to catch the Tall Ships Parade of Sail presented by Toronto Star and Porter Airlines. Send the tall ships a fond farewell as a fleet of fifteen vessels sails past Ontario Place in a two-hour procession of pomp and pageantry beginning at 2:00pm. Ceremonies include cannon blasts, foreign anthems, colour commentary and crew salutes!

  • Extreme Wake Series
    The electrifying and exhilarating sport of wakeboarding comes to Ontario Place! In this ultimate adrenaline amplifier, athletes are pulled along the water at breakneck speeds while hitting some gnarly tricks. Athletes will perform on a 40-foot rail constructed in the water inside Ontario Place with audience seating built along the edge of South Beach. Shows on June 26 & 27, July 10 & 11, July 24 & 25, August 14, 15 & 22.

  • Fisher Price “Little People” come to Staedtler Micro Kids
    From one generation to the next, Fisher Price Little People toys continue to captivate little ones’ hearts and imaginations. And now these little friends come to Micro Kids, Ontario Place’s attraction designed especially for pre-schoolers! Kids can get their hands on an extensive selection of Little People playsets and can play and dream to their hearts’ content.
    Once you’re in Micro Kids, don’t forget to check out the Staedtler Creativity Centre where kids can draw and colour while they learn and play.

Ontario Place is an internationally acclaimed cultural, leisure and entertainment parkland located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The complex extends throughout three man-made islands along the Lake Ontario waterfront. Ontario Place opened in May 1971 and featured a five pod pavilion complex, The Forum, pedal boats, a marina, restaurants and the world's first permanent IMAX® theatre, the Cinesphere.

Ontario Place was built as a showcase for the Province of Ontario that would replace the Government of Ontario building at the CNE and take advantage of what was then an under-developed waterfront area. Construction started on March 17, 1969 and took an estimated 1.5 million person hours of labour to build at a cost of $29M. The original park was consisted of three man-made islands connected by picturesque bridges and walkways with the Pods or Pavilion, complex and the geodesic dome of the Cinesphere as the focal points.The park initially encompassed 96 acres of which 51 acres were land fill. The gate first opened to the public on May 22, 1971, 38 years ago.

Founded in 1900 by a group of private citizens as the Art Museum of Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, with a physical facility of 486,000 square feet. Currently under construction, the AGO's new facility will boast 583,000 square feet, and will re-open in 2008 with an innovative architectural design by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry. The nearly transformed AGO closed its doors on October 7 as they install thousands of artworks in 110 galleries. They haven't set the reopening date yet but are aiming for Fall 2008.

Meanwhile, the public can keep in touch throughout the closure. The AGO's Gallery School will continue providing a full slate of classes for adults and children at its temporary location just down the street from the AGO at 60 McCaul.

The Market Gallery opened in 1979 and is an exhibition facility for the City of Toronto, Culture Division.

Located inside the South St. Lawrence Market on the south-west corner of Front Street East and Jarvis Street, the Market Gallery is on the second floor in the original council chamber, all that remains from Toronto's City Hall (1845-1899) which once stood on this site. The Market Gallery mounts several exhibits and hosts a number of special events each year.

A COMMON THREAD: A HISTORY OF TORONTO'S GARMENT INDUSTRY

A Common Thread chronicles the history of the garment industry that began over one hundred years ago and centred around Spadina Avenue. Photographs, vintage clothing and other items including old sewing machines provide a colourful backdrop to this fascinating aspect of Toronto's history. This exhibit explores a wide variety of issues such as immigrant opportunities, working conditions, union activity as well as individual stories of those who worked in this industry.

This event runs until June 15


ART & ARTEFACT: FINE AND DECORATIVE ART FROM THE CITY'S COLLECTIONS

Presented in partnership with Arts Services and Museum and Heritage Services, Culture, this exhibition will feature unique historical items from the City's collections. Running June 21 until October 19.
