Dundurn National Historic Site
The history of Dundurn National Historic Site is surprisingly varied. Evidence of hunting
and gathering by Paleo-Indians on the land dates back 9000 years. During the past
two-hundred years the land has been farmed, fortified and landscaped. It has been home to
Hamilton's early settlers, soldiers, and politicians. Join us for a leisurely walking tour
of the scenic grounds, get the dirt on archaeology and hear stories of war, ruins,
scandals and sports! Every Saturday in September. Rain or shine.

Before linoleum and the high cost of wall-to-wall carpeting in the 19th century, winter's
heavy wool carpets would have made way to lightweight, durable and versatile painted
canvas floorcloths in the spring. Learn a variety of decorative techniques, including
stenciling and faux finishing, and create a piece of artwork (and a conversation piece)
for your own floor! Materials will be supplied by the instructor.

Workshop: Mixed Media Decoupage

Create whimsical artwork (no artistic ability required!) on a stretched canvas using
paper, acrylics, fabric, embroidery floss, ribbon and beads, as well as objets trouves,
such as leaves, seed pods, shells. Learn decoupage and collage, which will form the base
for this project, and then build on it using a variety of materials. Materials supplied by
the instructor, but students are encouraged to bring in digital print-outs, pictures,
charms etc. to personalize their work.

Workshop: Braided Rag Rug

A combination of braiding and "weaving" produces a rug that is reversible,
machine washable & virtually indestructible since it requires NO sewing! Learn how to
make oval, round and square forms. Fabric will be provided to make a 7" trivet, which
may be used as a starter. A variety of practical items including trivets, place mats,
chair seats, pet beds and area rugs may be created using this method. All supplies will be
provided.

The Mcquesten's Childhood Christmas

Enjoy this special time of year as the McQuestens look back on the Christmas of their
childhood. Once a year we reveal the family's toys under a tree adorned with whimsical
decorations in the style of the 1880s. The table is set with the China they used for
Christmas and New Year's from the 1850s when they visited Grandpa, to the 1930s when Tom
entertained his fellow politicians. Cedar roping and satin ribbon complete the picture.
